28 March 2011 04:50 pmI've done a ton of thinking about my work ethic, lately. Mostly on the fact that I don't really have one and I can't justify that being a bad thing.
If you're getting paid to do something, your employer has the right to expect your best work, one hundred percent of the time. Except, I don't know. Do they? If I'm doing a grueling, physically demanding, psychologically draining job and my employer is paying me $2.13 an hour with no benefits—honestly, do they have any right to bitch to me about "goddamn lazy servers who do as little work as they can get away with"? Seriously? Motherfucker, you are paying us as little money as you can get away with. They will literally not give you one cent more: A typical restaurant will send you home midshift rather than have to suffer paying you overtime—which at time and a half adds up to a staggering $3.20 an hour. If you fail to warn them that you're approaching overtime you will be punished.
The service industry gets shit on in a lot of ways but what's really infuriating to me is that they're expected to be grateful for it. Don't just do your best, you're encouraged, do more. Do as much as you can, even if ninety percent of the extra work that you do will only benefit other people, most of whom are the same people taking advantage of you everyday. The people encouraging your work ethic. Man, you are such a good person, doing all of this for us. You make the same thing at the end of the day, but we love you.
And it's not just the employers, either. If you want service with a smile, you know what, maybe you should be willing to pay more than 99 cents for a fucking cheeseburger.
I am full of hate and I'm only twenty-five. I can't wait to see what I'm like when I'm thirty.
